Holiday musings

I am one who enjoys the Christmas season. I celebrate the capitalistic, kindness-driven, warm, santa-and-his-elves version of the holiday. For me, Christmas/New Year’s is about:

  • being festive
  • wearing a Santa hat around campus
  • decorating with friends
  • thinking about gifts that will match the person to whom they’re intended
  • reflecting on the content of days that have passed by this year
  • enjoying a good slice of pie
  • staring at the beauty of the snow as it falls and smooths out the ground’s surface
  • inhaling the scent of wintry air
  • watching It’s a Wonderful Life and White Christmas, and quoting passages from them like the sick fanboy that I am

This is my favorite time of the year.

The Birthday Gift

Time flows from Then until Now
but does not touch You for ill
in its face Your shine grows brighter
and Your song turns to a gentle breeze

as waves crash down upon You
the syllables of Your soliloquy persist
as pleasant as ever

if We did not celebrate Today—Your Birthday
then when could We honor the Gift We receive anew
on all other days that We awaken to?

the Gift of the knowledge
that You still walk this earth
to trod in Our hearts at will

to leave Your indelible Path
in the groves between Reality and Dreaming
where neither nightmares nor ghastly scares can find it

for this Gift
that none of Us truly deserve
We thank You

and wish You happiness, too
