  1. 2. because #3 is just going to make it lifelike enough to have sex with, and #1 has been working on the problem for forever without results.

  2. Clearly the single male researchers are the most motivated, whether they be Japanese or not. But I doubt they have need of a fully functional AI, just something that can fake a date.
And as for academia, they are working hard on it right now. But what would happen if they succeeded? How would a professor specializing in AI write a grant if an actually AI were to be created? Anyways the AI would likely make all the grad students look really bad in front of the professor, so they would all sabotage it.
That leaves the spammers and filters. The spammers have the motivation, which is purely monetary, as do the filters. Though both sides need to step up their game to the next level to get this done faster. An X-prise for spammers perhaps. Though I would be worried that the resulting AI might be forever trying to refinance and get itself a better loan.

  3. How about Wall Street financial engineers? Can you imagine the evolutionary pressure (aka “opportunity”) to create an AI to bet on markets better than humans?

I could imagine such a thing being developed and getting a 20% return each month. What would happen to the markets then? Would all the wealth go to whoever invented it? Would economies collapse?

BTW, thanks for keeping quoth up and running, I’ve been using it for years.
